Francisco Mena's Sumaba de Lourdes Micro Mill is located in Westbury, Costa Rica, a premium coffee producing region. Francisco is also the representative of Exclusive Coffee, an exporter that Maruyama Coffee works with when purchasing Costa Rican coffee. Exclusive Coffee is the company behind the 50 Pounds Elite Coffee Project, which Maruyama Coffee introduces.
Micro mills are small-scale production and processing plants that are mainstream in Costa Rica. The Sumava de Lourdes Micro Mill was established in November 2014. Francisco is taking advantage of the knowledge and experience he has gained as an exporter to carry out various experiments at this production and processing plant. In 2016, the plant won the Costa Rica Cup of Excellence, despite it being only the second time the plant entered the competition.
Francisco's contributions to the Costa Rican specialty coffee industry are enormous, and without his efforts, we would not be able to purchase so many different coffees from so many micromills and producers. Currently, it is said that there are more than 200 micromills in Costa Rica, and the number continues to increase every year. There is no doubt that Francisco's presence, who acts as a bridge between producers and us consumers, is very encouraging for producers who are establishing new micromills.
